Wind Ensemble
Lieutenant Commander Stephen J. Trzcinski, conductor
Giuseppe Verdi composed the opera La Forza del Destino (The Force of Destiny) on commission from the Imperial Theater in St. Petersburg, Russia, where it was premiered in 1862. After many revisions, the opera was produced in 1869 in Milan, Italy. The libretto was written by Franecsco Maria Pirave.
Transcriptions of orchestral literature for wind bands have been commonplace since the mid-19th century. Before recordings and radio became prevalent in American homes, the public would often hear great orchestral works for the first time by playing transcriptions in their town band. The arrangement of Verdi’s work heard here was written by Mayhew Lake while he was the editor-in-chief for band and orchestral music at the New York publisher, Carl Fischer.
This elegantly composed chamber album from Ellen Tsai has a playful feel, almost like the soundtrack to a storybook. Bandcamp New & Notable Aug 23, 2022
